So we have returned from the trip. From Movenpick, there is a back gate that leads to the villages. It's not a stellar path and I wish they had something more official. From there, you can wander through the Nubian villages. It is definitely very authentic with very narrow alleyways between buildings. There are two somewhat distinct villages with a bit of a gap between the two. After the second, you pop out near a fence with a gate that leads to the archaeological ruins, including the ticket counter and guide options. Views from the ruins are great and the Nilometer and temples are cool. It is definitely walkable, just be prepared for a rustic and local style walk through the villages.
