How difficult is the walking there. I can walk but not real long distance. Also are there a lot of stairs? I have some problem climbing a lot of stairs. Please help.

Not only are there lots of stairs but the smooth stone can be quite slippery and it’s very hard, so if you fall you could do some serious damage. Ok if you wear running shoes.
Please clarify what the name of the out of the town centre river gorge area with the oldest caves is? Could a 2019 traveller clarify how they transported themselves across to where those very old caves are. We are coming in to Matera in the morning from Taranto and only have the afternoon to explore.. But if we catch a taxi; what are we actually asking for? If we can catch a bus there in 2019, what are we asking for. Thanks.

I thought that I’d posted a reply today Samantha but it doesn’t seem to have posted. It’s called the Muglia National Park and is a distance away so you need a car, taxi or if you can get sensible responses out of the company called Matera City Tour. You can google it. That’s another option. But don’t go if it rains. You’ll get wet on their buses. I wanted to do their Parco Murglia and tour Cripta 150 min tour. But their responses didn’t make sense, We asked for departure times and where they were. Nothing was clear. We couldn’t find them so didn’t do it. We went to Sassi Barisano where there’s houses and churches. We may have been better to go to Sassi Caveoso if we wanted to see caves. But best option was to see the real thing in the Murglia Park.
Where would be the best place to park the car to visit the cave dwellings.thanks
