The company said Thursday that it will put "several" vehicles driven by humans in the two cities that will initially perform mapping.

Cruise deployed a small fleet of vehicles with drivers to map two South Bay Cities. This comes nearly a year after the company’s driverless fleet was pulled by state regulators, accused of trying to mislead them about their safety record.

Nearly a year after a Cruise driverless vehicle was involved in an accident in which a pedestrian was dragged, the autonomous vehicle company announced it would be resuming testing on Bay Area streets.

Cruise said that it will operate the cars in Sunnyvale and Mountain View. It won’t drive in San Francisco, where the company tussled with regulators.

General Motors’ (NYSE:GM) autonomous vehicle division, Cruise, will deploy manual mapping vehicles in the San Francisco Bay Area, progressing to supervised testing with up to five autonomous vehicles later in the fall,

But the General Motors-owned company said the move is intended as a step toward restarting its robotaxi service in the Bay Area. It’s not clear when Cruise be able to resume offering rides in San Francisco; the company would first need to get the sign-off from a pair or state agencies.
