Ben Shelton has reached his first Australian Open semifinal by defeating Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4) in an entertaining match

Ben Shelton advanced to the semi-final of the hard court major after beating Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.

The 21st seed Ben Shelton is through to his second Major semi-final at the Australian Open, the first in Melbourne. The young American ousted Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 in three hours and 50 minutes, remaining on the title course.

Since 1988, when the Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park, Shelton is just the second left-handed player to reach the semi-finals of both hard court grand slams, after the great Rafael Nadal. He is also the youngest left-handed player to reach the Australian Open semi-finals since Nadal back in 2008.

Lorenzo Sonego will be Ben Shelton's quarterfinal opponent in Australian Open 2025. The two will lock horns for the third out, with their head-to-head currently tied at 1-1.

Lorenzo Sonego's hopes of reaching his first Grand Slam semi-final at this year's Australian Open are over after the Italian lost 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 to American Ben Shelton in the last eight on Wednesday.
