Less than 250 days after being appointed as the new manager of Plymouth Argyle, Wayne Rooney has departed by mutual consent, the club announced. He leaves a club sitting at the bottom of the Championship after conceding a league-high 51 goals while also scoring the joint-fewest goals with 22.

Wayne Rooney has come to a mutual agreement with Plymouth Argyle to leave his role as head coach. The former England captain, 39, leaves the club after winning just four of his 23 league games in charge.

Plymouth Argyle’s marketing department may have hoped they were playing it safe by using an image of manager Wayne Rooney for the January entry on the club's 2025 calendar, but that plan was scuppered by confirmation of his exit on New Year’s Eve.
