South Korean chip giant SK Hynix Inc yesterday reported record quarterly profits, thanks to soaring demand for artificial intelligence (AI). The world’s second-largest memorychip maker dominates the market for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) semiconductors and is a key supplier for Nvidia Corp.

SEOUL, July 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korean chipmaking giant SK hynix Inc. said Thursday its second-quarter operating profit surpassed 9 trillion won (US$6.53 billion) for the first time, driven by booming demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips, including high bandwidth memory (HBM).

Kicks off HBM4 supply SK hynix is cranking up the memory arms race, confirming it’s building 24 Gb GDDR7 modules to give next-gen GPUs fatter VRAM buffers while lining up HBM4 for AI and HPC workloads.

SK Hynix is confident the boom in high-bandwidth memory chips is set to continue. That is good news not only for the South Korean company, but should also bolster its U.S. rival Micron Technology.
