A Boulder man is stunned to be living through two of the same tragedies twice: His parents lost their home to wildfires in Los Angeles not long after the third anniversary of losing his own home in the Marshall Fire.

More than 800 students at the University of Colorado Boulder are from the area of Los Angeles that’s been ravaged by wildfires in the last week.

Sparked by the devastation of the LA fires, we spoke with Fire Chief Brian Oliver about Boulder’s wildfire preparedness.

A Mountain View Fire Rescue crew and a Boulder Fire-Rescue crew were called Friday to assist with the Los Angeles area wildfires that have caused thousands to evacuate in recent days.

The fires that have engulfed Los Angeles cap the hottest decade in history. Each year in the last ten was record-warm, but 2024 was the warmest ever recorded. Last year, Earth was 1.6°C hotter than the temperature average of the late 19th century, which was before widespread fossil fuel burning had significantly altered the climate.

Fire crews and equipment from around the Front Range are now in California to help with the wildfires. The state also sent a specially designed plane.
