According to a news release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, more than $1 million has been approved for West Virginia residents who live in one of the four counties declared Major Disasters by President Donald Trump last week.
Only one week after a federal disaster was declared for Mercer, McDowell, Wyoming and Mingo counties, more than $1 million in federal assistance has already been approved for victims of the Feb. 15 flood.

West Virginia Emergency Management Division’s FEMA partners will have a Disaster Recovery Center open starting Friday in McDowell County to help victims of the devastating mid-February floods that occurred across Southern West Virginia.
The recovery is well underway, but for many a return to normal will take time. In parts of Mingo, McDowell, Mercer and Wyoming counties those who had homes flooded out have spent recent days moving soaked and ruined furniture and other belongings to the curb.
A Disaster Recovery Center will open in part of McDowell County to help people who were affected by flooding. According to a press release, the Disaster Recovery
Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Feb. 26, 2025 that the federal government accepted his request for Individual Assistance in McDowell, Mercer, Mingo and Wyoming counties. Other counties in the request still remain under consideration by FEMA according to the press release.
At this time FEMA officials are still reviewing reports and continue to receive virtual damage assessment surveys.
