The Kansas City Star reports that about 100 people gathered at the Skywalk Memorial Plaza to remember the 114 people killed when disaster struck the Hyatt Regency Hotel on July 17, 1981.

The collapse occurred July 17, 1981, during a dance that drew about 1,500 people to the hotel. Shortly after 7 p.m., the fourth-floor skywalk gave way, falling on a second-floor skywalk.

The Hyatt Regency Kansas City will be reflagged as a Sheraton on Jan. 1, following a $13 million renovation of the 733-room hotel. The hotel has been a Hyatt Regency since it opened in 1980.
