Al Golden joins fellow defensive coordinator Bob Diaco (2012) as the only Notre Dame football winners of the Broyles Award since its inception in 1996.

Former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden won the 2024 Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in college football. He took the same job with the Cincinnati Bengals shortly after the 2024-25 season ended,

Chris Ash, a former Rutgers head coach who spent the past four years in the NFL, will be Notre Dame's new defensive coordinator.

Notre Dame made the hiring of defensive coordinator Chris Ash official on Saturday, issuing a press release about the pending move (requires standard Notre Dame hiring protocol). In that release, Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman issued a statement about the veteran assistant that will now call the Fighting Irish defense.

Golden has been named the winner of this year's Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in college football. He's the second Irish assistant coach to win the award after Bob Diaco did so in 2012.
