Hurricane Erin’s passage far off shore created nearly perfect conditions for surfers along much of Florida’s coast. Miami Herald photographer Alie Skowronski spent Thursday morning on the beach in Stuart and caught amazing action on waves estimated at eight feet and higher.

South Florida saw the indirect impacts of Hurricane Erin. The NEXT Weather team said through Saturday there will be an increased risk of swells, rip currents and higher tides.

It’s been almost three years since Hurricane Ian swept through southwest Florida, causing mass destruction and staggering financial damage that the area is still recovering from.

Erin’s surf and storm surge could cause erosion along sections of the Florida and East Coast and shapes up as potentially worse for North Carolina’s barrier islands, which are under mandatory evacuation orders ahead of the four feet of storm surge and 20-foot offshore waves Erin is expected to bring.

As Hurricane Erin swirls around Florida, NASA is asking the public to submit their hurricane-related photos to help improve disaster response.
