Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “tepid endorsement” of measles vaccination puts the U.S. at risk of losing its elimination status of the disease as early as January, the Food and Drug Administration’s former top vaccine regulator said Tuesday.
The number of measles cases exceeded 500 in Texas on Tuesday, according to the state’s health department, which made the update days after a second Texas child died after contracting the highly contagious illness that has been confirmed in at least 20 states.
Measles cases related to the outbreak have been reported in 19 Texas counties since late January, with two-thirds located in Gaines County at 315, followed by Terry County with 43 cases, Lubbock County with 33 cases, Dawson County with 20, and Yoakum County with 17.
