Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung was elected president of South Korea in a snap election sparked by the impeachment of the country's former leader, Yoon Suk Yeol. As of early Wednesday, Lee had a lead over his conservative rival Kim Moon-soo that was mathematically impossible to surpass.

South Koreans will be heading to voting stations on Tuesday to elect their next president in the wake of Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment and removal from office in April. According to the public opinion trends over the past weeks,

The party's presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo was unable to convince Lee Jun-seok, the nominee from the minor conservative Reform Party, to drop out, likely splitting at least some of the vote. Former labour minister Kim won 41.15% of the vote and Lee Jun-Seok won 8.34%, to winner Lee Jae-myung's 49.42%.
