When the Penguins named David Quinn assistant coach earlier this month, the team only immediately specified that Quinn would coach the defensemen in his role, and made no mention of special teams.

It's almost unheard of in the NHL, but not completely. On Thursday, the New York Rangers announced the hiring of David Quinn, their head coach from 2018-21, as an assistant on Mike Sullivan's staff.

Quinn was hired by the Penguins on June 24, joining Mike Sullivan’s staff less than two months after being let go in San Jose, where he had a record of 41-98-25.

"David Quinn brings a wealth of coaching and developmental experience across the highest levels of professional and international hockey," said Penguins President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas.
