When the Penguins named David Quinn assistant coach earlier this month, the team only immediately specified that Quinn would coach the defensemen in his role, and made no mention of special teams.

But there are exceptions. Like on the occasions Sullivan is asked about his friend, David Quinn. Such was the case in January of 2023 when the San Jose Sharks, then coached by Quinn, came to town.

"David Quinn brings a wealth of coaching and developmental experience across the highest levels of professional and international hockey," said Penguins President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas.

Quinn was hired by the Penguins on June 24, joining Mike Sullivan’s staff less than two months after being let go in San Jose, where he had a record of 41-98-25.

Quinn also served as head coach of the New York Rangers (2018-21) and his alma mater, Boston U, from 2013-18. Three days into preseason camp, the Penguins have yet to conduct any power-play work.
