U.S. Park Police decided to close the park despite pushback from LGBT groups and an official request from D.C. police to keep it open.
U.S. Park Police and DC Police confirmed on Friday that Dupont Circle would be closed for what may be the largest pride festival in the District’s history, drawing criticism from DC leaders and the LGBTQ community.
The celebrants held signs declaring “Fight back,” “Gay is good,” “Ban bombs not bathrooms” and “We will not be erased.”
Several people attending WorldPride in D.C. this year said some of their fellow community members have been hesitant to go. But others felt it was more important to show up and be visible.
