According to the latest data from the IRS, $102.253 billion has been refunded to taxpayers so far this filing season, which began on January 27. The amount taxpayers are getting has increased too. The average refund amount has increased from $3,213 in 2024 to $3,453—a boost of $240.

Tax refunds in 2025 are currently running 32% lower than they were a year ago. That gap is expected to close in the coming weeks, though, as returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit begin to be processed.
