Nov 21, 2024 · Cologne Central Station is not only an important transport hub, but also a building of great historical and architectural significance. However, its location in the heart of the city and limited capacity make the infrastructure a bottleneck for rail traffic in the region.

The Cologne Central Station was constructed between 1857 and 1859 as a passenger station on the site of the old Botanical Garden. Today, it is one of the most visited stations in North Rhine-Westphalia, with about 310,000 travelers and passersby each day.

Köln Hauptbahnhof (English: Cologne Central Station) [6] is the central railway station of Cologne, Germany. The station is an important local, national and international transport hub, with many ICE, Eurostar and Intercity trains calling there, as well as regional Regional-Express, RegionalBahn and local S-Bahn trains.

Cologne's main railway station near the cathedral has been growing over the years and no longer meets the demands placed on such an important transport hub today. Within German and European rail transport, the existing station is regarded as a so-called "bottleneck".
